The Art of Exploration
What do art and outdoor exploration have in common? Observation, analysis, patience, deep engagement, and so much more! In this weekly series, students will explore and sharpen both their artistic and scientific skills through activities that provide exposure to a variety of techniques and materials including drawing, painting, ceramics, textiles, photography, and video.

Activities will take place both in the classroom and outdoors, but generally we will not travel far from our home base at Hill Center. Students ages 3 to 10 are invited to attend. No previous experience with any material is required, but students should be able to work in a classroom setting with some independence.

Our class size will be limited to 15 students. Most classed will be led by one instructor with support from assistants; though some classes with have a second instructor. In addition to our core staff trained in visual art, we'll host a variety of guest instructors.

Caregivers may drop off 3:30-3:45 and pick up at 5:30. Dropoff and pickup are at Hill Center. Our room assignment may vary, so caregivers should check the sign board at the 9th street entrance.
There is no designated snack time, but snack will be available until 4:30. All snacks will be nut- and peanut-free. Students do not need to bring or purchase any supplies.

At the start of each month, course topics will be posted for the following month (e.g. March details will post February 1), but the Tuesday schedule will remain the same.

Registration: $30 for individual class, $165 for six-class pack ($27.50 per class). Drop-ins are welcome, but must register by 5pm on the day prior to class. Tuition assistance is available. Email admin@acorndc.org to inquire.

January & February: Winter Trees
Leafless trees in winter are often overlooked but no less magical. In our winter tree series, we'll observe the anatomy of deciduous trees, focusing on structure, branching patterns, bark texture, bud formation, and other features that are not as apparent in warmer seasons. We'll also learn about what's happening internally while dormant trees are preparing for spring--deepening our understanding as we translate our observations to creative work across a variety of media.
