Founder & Lead Instructor
Lisa Brooks
Lisa spent her early childhood roaming the foothills of Los Angeles, climbing back yard fruit trees, and hunting for ants In her family’s garden. She comes from a long line of farmers and naturalists, but only rediscovered her love of birds, insects, and trees as a preschool teacher. She has worked In Reggio-inspired and DCPS schools with children ages two to five, and has spent many hours hiking, camping, and exploring with her own children. She Is a novice beekeeper and avid collector of bugs, nests, baby rats, and other odd specimens.​

Bailey Weaver
Bailey is a lifelong nature lover and an enthusiastic supporter of children learning about the world around them. She and her family have lived in Capitol Hill for ten years, and she feels more connected to nature living in DC than anywhere else! Bailey thinks that immersing yourself in nature is important, especially when we live in a more urban environment. She is passionate about fostering a love of the outdoors from an early age, making messes, not taking yourself too seriously, and bugs.​

Candace Gibson
Candace comes to The Hill by way of south Georgia, where a great day at the beach means exploring a mysterious maritime forest or seeking out the silent sands of a barrier island. With a front yard full of majestic oak trees and the nearby river populated by manatees, adventures came easily. Now an urbanite, Candace knows that adventures in DC unfold just as magically for those willing to put in the steps and prioritize play. Candace loves inspiring people of all ages to move their bodies, and she especially enjoys imaginative movement outdoors.

Sarah Vaughn
Sarah is a DMV native — born in Maryland, raised in Virginia, and has resided in DC for the past 10 years. She’s a lifelong learner and an avid reader with a background in secondary education (middle/high school English teacher). She loves working with kids of all ages, and is inspired daily by her own children. She’s an adventurer (she once worked on a fishing boat in Cordova, Alaska!) with a playful personality. With a keen eye for discovering new experiences in nature, she especially loves exploring hidden gems within our own community.

Abi Davies
From a young age, Abi has loved being outside and seeing the beauty in nature. She likes nature walks, running, swimming, playing soccer, and just generally soaking up the sun. Abi worked at a large sports camp for five years in college, where she enjoyed helping kids step out of their comfort zones through camping, white water rafting, playing sports, and all things outdoor adventure. She has been living in DC for the past 6 years, and currently teaches 3rd grade. She is excited to spend more time outside this summer!​

Sophia Zinn
Sophia is a rising junior and psychology major at Fordham University. She grew up on Capitol after spending the first five years of her life on a houseboat in Southwest D.C. Sophia believes nothing is more peaceful than being on the water and loves boating, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and anything that involves being outside and experiencing nature. One of her favorite things is to camp at Assateague national seashore, where horses run wild! Despite her love of nature, Sophia is a city girl at heart and enjoys exploring in her hometown of Washington, D.C., as well as in her adopted hometown of the Bronx.

Isa Thompson
Isa is a longtime lover of the natural world. She spent her childhood summers hiking National US Parks and her winters skiing and making snow igloos with her brothers. As an urban planning and GIS student at University of Toronto, she studies what makes cities unique and how we can better them for both current and future generations. Isa was born and raised in the Tri-State area then moved to DC with her family in 2017. Since then Isa’s love for DC has only grown greater. In her free time she enjoys walking in Rock Creek Park with her dog, playing pickle ball, and crocheting!

Zadie Horowitz
Zadie, a rising 7th grader, has worked at The Acorn School for two years. From a very young age, Zadie spent time assisting their mom in her preschool classroom and helping design creative and challenging activities for students. Zadie is skilled in outdoor activities like camping, hiking, foraging, and gardening. They are also experienced in art, including art history, sculpture, theater, music, and fashion design.

Henry Horowitz
Rising 9th grader Henry (aka Hank) is an experienced outdoorsman who learned to pitch a tent and build a fire at an early age while camping with his family. His passions lie in electronics, gaming, 3D printing, and welding; but he is quite skilled in mountain biking, carpentry, and chopping wood. He’s kind of a renaissance man. He does it all. And he does it with a smile and an easygoing attitude that are delightful to kids and grownups alike. ​​​​

Bailey Irizarry
Bailey is a rising 7th grader who has many interests and talents including art, biology, and math. Summer 2024 will be Bailey's first year working at acorn. Bailey is wonderful with kids of all ages and hopes to make this summer amazing for all the campers. She grew up in DC with a love for everything nature related, especially animals. Bailey has many pets including dogs, fish, and an axolotl.

Micah Palmer
Micah, a DC native, is a rising 7th grader at Stuart Hobson Middle School. He loves animals, especially dogs, and enjoys spending time in the sun, playing sports and other outdoor activities. His passions include football, swimming, cooking and a newfound interest in barbering. He loves art, crafting and spending time with his younger siblings. Summer 2024 will be Micah's first year working at Acorn and he looks forward to joining the team and helping little kids develop their love for nature.

Elizabeth Kirby
Elizabeth is a rising 7th grader at Stuart Hobson who loves performing, crafting, and enjoying nature. Her favorite places are the beach and the mountains. She has two younger sisters who have given her lots of experience playing with kids and is really looking forward to being a junior counselor!
